Tunisian circumcision party (tahour): traditions

The tahour, the Tunisian circumcision party: the boy’s jebba and chéchia, the henna the night before, the taalila songs, Kairouan on the 27th of Ramadan.

In Tunisia, a boy’s circumcision is not only a medical procedure: it is a family celebration, the tahour (الطهور), with its own songs, outfit and ululations — parents often organise it like a small wedding. Here are the traditions of the Tunisian circumcision party, how they vary, and what to prepare.

The mtahher in jebba and chéchia

On the day, the boy — the mtahher (المطهّر) — wears traditional dress: a jebba robe, often white, a red chéchia cap and balgha slippers. The night before, a little henna is applied to his hands and feet, as for a groom. It is his day: he sits at the centre, is photographed and spoiled.

The taalila and the songs

Tahour music has a name: the taalila, a song of praise and blessing sung for the child in both Muslim and Jewish Tunisian families. The sound archive of Tunisia’s Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music holds a “taalila of the mtahher” preceded by the hilalou, the procession chant. Today a band, drums and shawm, or a Sufi singing group lead the celebration — with ululations throughout.

The 27th of Ramadan in Kairouan

Many families choose the 27th night of Ramadan, believed to be the Night of Power, for their sons’ circumcision. In Kairouan, families from across the country gather at the mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, where the boys are carried in triumph to music and ululations, as La Presse reports; associations also organise collective circumcisions for children from modest families. It is a tradition, not an obligation: the medical procedure is done by a doctor or in a clinic, and the party can take place at any time of year.

Preparing and inviting

The checklist is short: the doctor’s appointment, the outfit (bought or rented), the henna the night before, the music, the pastries and meal, and invitations sent early enough for relatives who live far away.
