Sharing your wedding invitation on WhatsApp: how to do it

In Tunisia the invitation goes out on WhatsApp — that is where the guests are, from the cousin in Sfax to the aunt in Marseille. But there is a difference between dropping a photo of the card into a group and sending a real invitation, and your guests feel it right away. Here is how to do it well.

What the guest sees when the link arrives

A well-made invitation link does not look like a link: WhatsApp shows a card with the first names, the date and an image, before anyone even taps. On tapping, the invitation opens inside WhatsApp itself — no app to install, no account. They read, look at the photos, open the directions, and reply in two taps.

When to send

• Three to four weeks before the party: early enough for distant family to organise, late enough that nobody forgets.
• One week before, a reminder with the same link — this is when the replies really come in.
• The day before, a last message to the latecomers, with the time and the directions. Always the same link.

Private message or broadcast list?

A WhatsApp group exposes everyone’s number and makes every reply visible to all. Prefer either private messages — one per person, with a word for each — or a broadcast list: the message goes to everyone at once, but each person receives it as a personal message and replies privately.

For the groom’s family and the bride’s family, it is common to have two links — each with its own text and sometimes its own programme. Send the right link to the right side: that is also what keeps a henna guest from ending up with the general invitation.

What message to write

Short, warm, in the first person. The invitation already says everything; the message says that you are thinking of this person. For example:

Dear aunt Najet, we are delighted to invite you to our wedding. Everything is in this link — just tell us if you will be there. We are counting on you! Ahmed and Amira

Beyond WhatsApp

• Messenger, Telegram, SMS — the same link is shared anywhere, with the phone’s share button.
• Instagram — the link only shows in direct messages; do not rely on a story or a bio to invite.
• The paper card and the venue — a QR code points to the invitation: on the card, or at the entrance of the hall, it opens the same link.
• Family abroad — they receive the link within the second, in their language, with the time shown correctly.
